Blur background results: four examples

Four portraits from the tool, the original room softened behind the person.

  • Portrait of a woman in a grey hoodie with the room behind her blurred

    Shelves and a window, softened

The bookshelf and window behind this portrait melt into soft shapes while the hair, face and hoodie stay sharp.

  • Portrait of a man in a dark fleece jacket with a blurred room behind him

Blur background of a busy room

A cluttered room with a doorway and a dark shape on the right turns into a calm backdrop. The zipper and fleece texture stay crisp, so the eye goes to the face first.

  • Portrait of a smiling woman with glasses, background blurred

Blur background around glasses and hair

Thin glasses frames and loose strands of dark hair are the edges that give a cut-out trouble. Here the plant and the window behind her are blurred and the outline reads cleanly.

  • Portrait of a smiling man in a blue polo with a blurred room behind him

Grey hair against a bright window

Short grey hair and a mustache sit in front of a bright window. The blur stays behind the head and the polo shirt reaches the bottom edge of the frame.

How to blur the background of a photo

Three steps, and no setting to tune.

  1. 1

Add the photo you want to blur

Click Upload image, drop files on the page or paste one with Ctrl+V. PNG, JPG and WebP files up to 25 MB work. You can add several photos; they run one after another and download one by one or as a ZIP. Dropping a folder adds nothing, so pick the files themselves.

  2. 2

    Let it find the subject

To blur background areas, the page first finds the subject. A photo takes a fraction of a second on a recent laptop with WebGPU, a second or two without it. The blurred result is shown right away, because Blur the original background is preselected.

  3. 3

    Check it, then download

Flip between Original, Removed and Compare to look at the edges. Then click Download PNG. If you would rather have a plain backdrop, one click switches to transparent, white, black or a color you pick.

Why blur background of a photo here

What this tool does that a slider-based blur does not.

  • Your photo stays on your device

Your picture is processed in your browser and never uploaded to our servers. The model and engine files are downloaded to your browser, but no picture data goes with them, so there is no copy of your photo on a server.

  • One fixed blur, sized to your photo

There is no slider to blur background more or less. The blur radius is about one sixtieth of the photo's long side, so a small and a large photo get the same look. It is a flat blur, not a lens: near and far parts of the room blur the same amount.

  • The cut-out comes with it

The subject is cut out first, then the blurred original goes behind it. If you decide you want a clean backdrop instead, the cut-out is already there: pick transparent, white, black or a custom color.

  • Full-size PNG, free, no watermark

The PNG keeps the pixel size of your photo. There is no sign-up and no watermark. The edges come from a lower-size mask scaled up, so single hairs on a very large photo can look softer.

How to blur background so it looks right

The model guesses the subject, so the photo you start with matters.

  • To blur background cleanly, use a photo where one person or object is clearly the main subject.
  • Pick a shot with some contrast between the subject and what is behind it.
  • Keep the subject fully inside the frame, with a little room around the edges.
  • Start from the largest version you have, because the PNG keeps its pixel size.
  • Open Compare and look at hair, glasses and shoulders before you download.
  • If a patch of room stays sharp next to the subject, try another shot; there is no brush to fix it by hand.
