Cutout of a portrait on a transparent background, made with the PNG tool while the SVG background remover is not ready

What an SVG background remover does

An SVG is a drawing written as text, not a grid of pixels. Its background is usually one shape, often a rectangle that a design tool added behind the artwork on export. A true SVG background remover deletes that shape, so the file stays a vector and scales without blur.

That is a different job from cutting a person out of a photo, which means predicting which pixels belong to the subject.

This SVG background remover is not built yet. If you drop an SVG above, the file is not processed. You see a short note and an email form with one question, so we know what to build first.

The picture tool on this site works today on PNG, JPG and WebP. It returns a PNG, a raster image, so it cannot give you a scalable SVG.

Where an SVG background comes from

Each source needs its own fix, and only one of them is a pixel job.

A rectangle from a design export

Some design tools export a solid rectangle the size of the canvas behind the artwork. It is often the first shape in the file. Once you have confirmed it is a background and not part of the drawing, deleting it makes the SVG transparent.

White shapes in a traced logo

A logo traced from a PNG or JPG can carry white paths around the artwork. Inspect white shapes one by one before removing them: they may be part of the logo rather than its background.

A background rule in the style

A hand-written or web-exported SVG can set its background in a style rule instead of a shape. Remove the rule and the file is transparent again.

A photo wrapped inside the SVG

Some SVGs hold a PNG or JPG in their markup rather than vector shapes. That background is pixels. Save the embedded picture as PNG, JPG or WebP and use the picture tool on it.

No background at all

Before relying on an SVG background remover, check for a background shape, a CSS background or an embedded image. If there is none, the file may already be transparent, and a white preview alone does not prove it holds a white background. Preview it on a coloured backdrop.

Remove background SVG files by hand today

These checks concern vector artwork, which the picture tool cannot handle; our SVG background remover is not available yet.

  • Copy the file first, so you can go back to the original.
  • Open the SVG in a text editor and look for a rect near the top with a solid fill and width and height of 100%, or the size of the viewBox. Also look for a background set in a style rule.
  • On the copy, remove a candidate rectangle only after confirming it is the background and not part of the artwork, then save and open the file again to check the result.
  • Alternatively, use a vector editor to inspect the file and remove only the confirmed background element, then save a copy as SVG.
  • Preview the result on a coloured page, such as pink, so leftover white shows at once.
  • If the file wraps a raster picture, save that picture as a PNG and run it through the picture tool for a transparent PNG.
  • Drop the SVG above and leave your email if you want to hear when our SVG tool works; the one question is optional.
