Green screen remover for photos, not video
This green screen remover works on still images. Upload a photo shot in front of a green backdrop, or a frame you saved from a video, and you get a PNG with the background gone. It does not take video files, so a clip needs a video editor or a video tool.
A classic chroma key tool is given one colour and deletes everything close to it. This tool runs in your browser, looks at the whole picture, decides which part is the subject and makes the rest transparent. You never pick a green or move a tolerance slider.
In our tests on portraits, hair, fur and thin strokes the edges held up; check yours against the original in Compare. Your picture is processed in your browser and never uploaded to our servers.

Remove a green screen: colour key or subject detection
Two ways to get the green out of a photo, and where each fits.
| This tool | Colour-key tool | |
|---|---|---|
| What decides what goes | A model picks out the subject | Pixels close to the colour you choose |
| Your setup | Upload, then download | Pick the colour, set tolerance and softness |
| Green on the subject | Not tied to a colour | Can be cut along with the screen |
| Other colours | Not colour based | Blue or any custom colour |
| Even, flat screen needed | Not required, still helps | Some keying guides warn that uneven light can leave patches |
| Fine control | None, no brush or sliders | Sliders for tolerance and edges |
| Output | PNG at original size, or on a colour | Usually a transparent PNG |
Before you upload, and how to check the result
A few minutes of checking saves a bad edge in the final design.
- Use a JPG, PNG or WebP under 25 MB; you do not need to convert a camera JPG to PNG first.
- Some video-keying guides recommend an evenly lit screen and some distance between the subject and the screen. This green screen remover uses subject detection, not a colour-key setup, so those rules are a guide to your shoot rather than a setting here.
- Compare the result with the original in the Compare view: stray green on skin or hair is easy to see against a White or Black background.
- Open the Compare view and look at the hair, hands and the edge of clothing before you download.
- Switch the background to White, Black or a custom colour: stray green shows up fast on a contrasting colour.
- Add several photos from one shoot together, then use Download all as ZIP to save every PNG at once.
- If a patch of green or part of the subject is wrong, try another photo; there is no brush to fix it by hand.
